Cultural District Virtual Tour
Photo by J. E. Clark The recorded history of The Japanese Garden begins with the early years of Fort Worth when it was the quarry for gravel used in construction of many of the city's earliest streets. During World War I Camp Bowie used the abandoned quarry as a garbage dump. Efforts were made to use the existing topography when the city took over the land to expand the gardens, although stone was added where needed to complete the picture.
Visitors now find a peaceful formal Japanese garden tucked away in about as unlikely a spot as you can imagine. We continue to recycle and reinvent our hometown to be a little better each time you visit.
