Cultural District Virtual Tour
Photo by J. E. Clark No tour of Fort Worth's cultural district could be complete without including Electra Waggoner Biggs' rendition of Will Rogers "Riding into the Sunset" on his favorite horse Soapsuds. It was the friendship between this famous comedian/philosopher and Amon G. Carter that resulted in this area being named the Will Rogers Memorial Complex. This work was commissioned by Mr. Carter and dedicated in a ceremony presided over by president Eisenhower. Margaret Truman sang "Home on the Range" during the dedication. Although not from Fort Worth, Will Rogers was much admired throughout America's West and Fort Worth is after all, "Where the west begins".
As a side note: Electra Waggoner Biggs was the namesake of the Buick Electra. More information about the Waggoner Family can be found on the homepage of the W. T. Waggoner Ranch
There is a Historical Marker at the foot of the tree the statue faces and another marker under a tree near the east end of the same lawn.
