Photo by J. E. Clark With the move to Thorp Spring the Clark brothers adopted the name AddRan Male and Female Academy. Although instructors were required to be members of the Christian Church, Addison stood firm on his position not to have the word "Christian" in the name of the school. He felt it should be known for its deeds rather than its words.
Suffering from a long string of cash flow problems, the brothers relinquished control of the school and it became known as AddRan Christian University in 1889. In 1896 the school moved to Waco, Texas and it was renamed Texas Christian University in 1902.
